Axel Retif (Puebla, Mexico, 1992)

Composer and producer whose music is known for its electric, dynamic, and abrasive character. From a single idea, he creates sonic worlds that unfold with an organic sense of time—both patient and explosive. His work has been featured in over 90 performances between 2022 and 2025, establishing him as a rising figure in the contemporary music scene, both nationally and internationally.

He has participated in festivals such as CAMPGround (USA), Festival Internacional Cervantino (México), Foro Internacional de Música Nueva Manuel Enríquez (México), June in Buffalo (USA), Festival Atemporánea (Argentina), Festival Internacional de Santa Rosa (Bolivia), Encuentro de Intérpretes y Compositores (Argentina), and the John Donald Robb Trust Composers’ Symposium (USA).

His music has been performed by more than 40 artists and ensembles from countries including México, the United States, Ecuador, Argentina, Germany, Costa Rica, the United Kingdom, Chile, South Korea, Venezuela, Turkey, and Finland—among them Arditti Quartet, Splinter Reeds, Loadbang, Duo Yonx, Trío Siqueiros, Mushamukas Ensamble de Contrabajos, Slee Sinfonietta, and Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Puebla.

His discography includes the albums Sincronías (2021) and House of Flies (2022), as well as the collective album Ecos de Viaje – Stefano Scodanibbio, recorded by Mushamukas Ensamble de Contrabajos, all released by Tagma Records. In 2023, he represented México and Radio UNAM at the 69th International Rostrum of Composers with his piece Taos (2022).

Retif holds a master’s degree in Theory and Composition from The University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. In addition to his creative work, he serves as director/editor of Tagma Records and artistic director of Festival Methexis.
